The Roswell UFO Festival

For one weekend a year, a working small city in southeastern New Mexico closes its main street, fills up entirely, and commits to the bit harder than any town in America. It is genuinely fun. It is also hot, crowded and a nightmare to park in.

When is the Roswell UFO Festival?

It is an annual downtown street festival held around the Fourth of July weekend. The 2026 festival ran July 2–4, per the organizer’s own site.

The following year’s dates had not been published when this page was written. You will find confident-looking future dates on aggregator and travel sites; the organizer has not announced them, and a wrong festival date is the sort of error that costs somebody a flight. Check ufofestival.com for the announcement.

Checked 16 August 2026. Hours, prices and dates change — confirm with the festival organizer before you go.

What actually happens

Main Street closes and becomes the festival. The organizer’s own site groups it into events and entertainment, a festival map, vendors, and the shop-and-dine trail they call the Alien Crawl, which takes in restaurants and bars across town.

The texture of it is costume contests, parades, live music, market stalls, alien-themed everything, and a town three times its usual size. Guest speakers and screenings run alongside — the UFO Museum programs its own speaker schedule around the same period.

The specific line-up changes every year, which is why this page does not list one. The organizer publishes the schedule, the map and the vendor list on their site as the dates approach, and that is the only version worth reading.

The parking problem, and how to handle it

This is the single most common complaint, and it is structural rather than fixable: the street where all the parking is becomes the venue. Three practical approaches:

  • Park further out and walk in. Roswell is flat and the walk is short. This is what most people end up doing after failing to do it first.
  • Arrive early and stay. One trip in, one trip out, and treat the day downtown as the plan rather than something you dip into.
  • Stay somewhere with its own driveway. Which is not a subtle point on a page published by a rental, but it is also just true: your own parking, fifteen minutes out, changes the weekend. More on that here.

Book lodging far earlier than feels sensible

Roswell has a fixed number of beds and one weekend a year when the whole country’s attention points at it. Festival-weekend accommodation goes early, and people who leave it late end up commuting from another town or sleeping a long way out.

If your dates are anywhere near the Fourth of July, look now. Where to stay in Roswell covers the honest comparison between the options, including where a hotel beats a house.

The heat is not a footnote

July in Roswell averages a high of 94°F, and the festival is an outdoor, standing-around, walking-the-street kind of event. It is also the wettest month, at about two inches, which arrives as short dramatic afternoon thunderstorms rather than steady rain.

Plan for both: water, shade, sun cover, and somewhere to retreat to in the middle of the afternoon. If you are bringing children or a dog, that retreat is not optional. The month-by-month numbers are here.

If you would rather avoid it entirely

Entirely reasonable, and worth saying on a page like this. The UFO Museum is open daily all year and is far better when you can actually read the exhibits. Bottomless Lakes is at its best in May or October. The town is quieter, cheaper and more pleasant in the shoulder seasons, and you lose nothing except the parade.

Festival questions

When is the Roswell UFO Festival?

It is an annual downtown street festival held around the Fourth of July weekend. The 2026 festival ran July 2-4, according to the organizer's own site. Dates for the following year had not been published when this page was written, so check ufofestival.com for the announcement rather than trusting a date you find on an aggregator.

Where do you park during the UFO Festival?

Main Street itself closes for the street events, so downtown parking is the thing everybody complains about. The workable approach is to park further out and walk in, arrive early, or stay somewhere with its own driveway and make one trip in and out per day.

Does the UFO Museum stay open during the festival?

The International UFO Museum keeps its normal daily hours of 9AM to 5PM year-round, and festival weekend is its busiest of the year. Expect a queue, and go early in the day if you want to actually read the exhibits.

Is the UFO Festival worth traveling for?

If you enjoy small-town Americana done wholeheartedly, yes. It is costume contests, parades, vendors, live music and a downtown full of people committing to the joke. If you want a polished, curated festival experience, it is not that, and the heat and crowds will grind on you. It is at its best if you treat it as one part of a longer Roswell trip rather than the whole reason for coming.
