Getting to Roswell

Roswell is a drive from everywhere, and that is worth planning for rather than discovering. There is an airport in town, three US highways meet here, and the last hour of any approach is long, flat and beautiful in a way that catches people out.

Flying in

Roswell Air Center (airport code ROW) is the city’s commercial airport, and it is genuinely in town rather than an hour away — which is unusual and useful.

We are not going to list airlines, routes or frequencies here. Regional air service changes, and a travel page confidently naming a route that was cut last year is exactly the kind of thing that strands somebody. Check current service with the airport and the airlines directly when you book.

The same applies to on-site car rental: check availability with the airport when you book the flight rather than assuming. You will want a car — this is why — and Roswell is not a town where arriving without one works well.

The larger alternative is to fly into a bigger airport and drive. That turns the approach into a road trip of several hours, which some people enjoy and others should plan carefully around daylight.

Driving in

Three US highways meet in Roswell, and knowing which one you are arriving on tells you most of what you need:

  • US 285 runs north–south and is Main Street through the middle of town. This is the road from the north and from Carlsbad in the south.
  • US 380 runs east–west and is Second Street in town — the road from Lincoln and the mountains in the west, and from Texas in the east.
  • US 70 comes in from the northwest, from Ruidoso and the Sacramento mountains.

Both US 285 and US 380 are named on the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s own directions to Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which is a useful cross-check if you want to confirm the layout before you set off.

One distance we can state properly

The National Park Service publishes a driving-distance table for Carlsbad Caverns, and it lists Roswell at 103 miles from the park — roughly two hours each way, south on US 285. That is the one figure on this page taken from a primary source, and it is the one most likely to affect your plans, because Carlsbad Caverns is the biggest thing within reach. The day-trips page covers it properly.

For the other approaches — El Paso, Albuquerque, Lubbock, Amarillo — we are not printing mileages we could not source to an official publisher. Any mapping app will give you an accurate figure for your actual starting point, which is better than a round number from a travel page.

What the drive is actually like

Long, straight, empty and much emptier than most visitors expect. There are stretches with no fuel, no food and no cell signal, and the distances between towns are real. A few things that are worth doing rather than regretting:

  • Fill up when you can, not when you need to. Half a tank is the point to start looking, not a quarter.
  • Carry water. Not dramatic advice, just correct in this part of the country.
  • Watch for wildlife at dusk and dawn. Deer and livestock on unfenced stretches are the genuine hazard here, more than other traffic.
  • Download your directions. Signal is patchy between towns.
  • Shop on the way in. Roswell has full-size supermarkets, and arriving stocked means you can start the first evening in the kitchen rather than in the car again.

The compensation is the drive itself. The Pecos valley at the end of the day, with the light going long across it, is one of the better hours of driving in the Southwest.

Arriving at the house

Check-in is after 3:00 PM and checkout is before 10:00 AM. The exact address and the check-in instructions come through after your booking is confirmed on Airbnb — standard practice for an occupied rental, and covered on the booking page.

There is free parking on the premises, on a wide driveway at the front, plus gated gravel RV parking down the side if you are arriving in something larger.
